Sounds good....didn't mean to throw a wrench in the idea. I just got started on the maps, and was trying to make them as realistic as possible. Also, as we grow, it will be easy to add to the interactive map....then right to the image map.

You know the more we add to this place the more interesting it becomes. If I had developed the ideas myself, I would probably try and publish a story based in Prime's Local Bubble.

I am leaning more towards a smaller ship, though I think we should start another sub at some point to create a couple of super cargo ships. Massive things that travel some sort of route around and around the bubble. I have a few ideas that I might drop somewhere shortly.

So with this one, I think it suits its nature better if it is smaller. I am thinking a hybrid of the ideas we have had so far.

So the ship will have a central cargo bay, with some sort of cargo lift/entrance type facility in it as well. Then allow 4 modules to be added to plug into the ship and provide other cargo bays, or other functionality.

So if you want a ship that is something like Serenity or star wars type cargo ships then you just stick on four cargo bay modules, and move the cargo in and out via the central bay. Unless the external modules have external access which is also possible.

Another way to use the ship would be to just drop off and pick up modules without ever opening them, like modern cargo ships do.

It would also allow you to configure the ship into a few other supporting roles. A luxury room, entertainment, dining hall, etc could all be added to turn the ship into a reasonable pleasure yacht.

It also allows, of course, for the ship to be configured in the manner required for covert ops and intelligence gathering.

How does that sound?

Given the new maps the direction I had these guys going before would put them somewhere in the middle of Hu space. If everyone is cool with that then so am I.

It allows us to give a plausible reason for having human cyborgs as members of the Amalgam already, as they have been going through human space for a while on sublight.

That sound ok to everyone?

I've updated some of the stars on the local map. This is pretty exciting...me thinks. This map of the local bubble has all stars in their actual positions looking down from above the galaxy. I still need to add a lot more stars to the physical map. A couple of the races don't have many at all. I plan to add a lot to the interactive map.

Attachment:

map.gif

You answered your own question. Why not make it a mix between something like a C-130 and a mega carrier like you mentioned. Have a huge internal chamber that can be pressurized if needed. Or, better stil simply use tge internal area as a shielded storage bay with the indivudal contained being airtight where needed. That gives you a lot more lee way, although that is sometging that would likely be huge. Omydeargod deathstar not-a-moon huge.

Serenity operates on that principle except she deals in much smaller cargo and maintains the atmosphere.

Idea! Why not make the beagles huge mega carriers. That way they can still trade, and bring in money for Blackstone, but also do SpecOps and such on the side. Wouldn't bee too big if a stretch to have certain caro containers make up a secret compartment. I'm thinking like the bookcase secret door.

I had originally had a cargo bay style ship in mind. But that's only because I hadn't really thought about a modular ship.

I think the real question is what is the most common style of cargo transport? My thoughts are that it would be modular cargo ships, like the super cargo ships of today. The only reason I could think of that not working would be if making the modules safe from the rigours of space travel was too expensive, or they are too heavy or something.

What do you guys think about it from a scientific point of view? Could you make a shipping container safe to go through space? Presumably that means it can hold atmosphere, would be armoured enough to withstand common space junk (unless shields are used or something), need to be moved by some sort of fork-lift type vehicle in port, etc.

If we can answer how that would work, possibly in another sub, then I am happy to go with the modular cargo space idea :). What do you think?

From the Amalgam sub:

Quote:

Emissaries: The Emissaries are the diplomats and traders of the fleet. Anyone involved in commerce would be a member. They are also responsible for first contacts with new species and forming of diplomatic agrements as well as buying and selling all manner of goods from all over the universe. The Emissaries have a fleet of small merchant vessels that all dock with a larger ship that is basically a giant warehouse of goods. This ship is always at the centre of the fleet, close to the Helicon to give it the best protection that can be achieved.

So yes. I hadn't really thought of them being like a giant flea market, but I like it.

So that gives me 3 or 4 distinct types of Amalgam ships that I have in my head:
The Helicon (the city-ship at the core of the fleet)
The Emissaries warehouse type capital ship
Vanguard type exploration/special assignment vessels
Emmisaries diplomatic and trade ships. (Note that this and the vanguard ship could be one or several types of ships)
The flea market type ship.

There would be others, defense ships, smaller village-ships, etc. But I haven't really had them come up yet.

So if anyone wants to jump in with a separate thread on any of these then let me know. I am happy to have other people work on the ships,a s long as I get some input :).

Nother try....

Template by: Jesse
Title: Personal Data Device
Author: TA Lucas
Editor:

Description: The personal data device is one of the most basic computing systems. It's built with nano-circuits that are embedded within its flexi-glass body. Its 15 THz processor and 50 Petabyte hard drive are beefy enough to run most of your games, personal applications, and holographs. The 12cm screen is viewable from either side, and can be rolled up with a single tap. The flexi-glass is also self regenerating, so no more worrying about those pesky scratches.

With just one tap, you can project a large 68 cm screen to watch your favorite movies or holographs. You can quickly browse any local networks, view current star system's time along with the standard cycles, or use any number of software applications. It takes input via voice command, and can also be interfaced with other devices within a 10 meter range.

It uses a cardio-biometric reader to restrict unwanted access to a users personal data. To access the device, the user must physically touch the PDD, and the unique electrical signal created by the heart will grant access. Security can be enabled, disabled, or delayed after putting it down.

Most PDDs come with a couple semi-intelligent AI personalities. They can help you manage your data, keep track of schedules, inform you of local broadcast messages, and even crack a joke or two. These intelligent systems only serve as an interface between you and your data, and are not sentient. They come with several voices, the default being a soft female voice.

Cost: 75 credits

Availability: The PDD is available at most merchant shops.

I've also updated all the maps on the Map Page of the Archives

This map is not complete...I will need to add the actual stars in their correct positions. But you can see the species have been rotated 90 degrees clockwise. Coreward is now toward the right of the map.

Attachment:

map.gif

As I've been studying the science behind the stars, I realized we had them positioned incorrectly. In order to match the new interactive map, we will have to redo a couple of the other maps. Here's one example... instead of Earth being in cell V15, we need to rotate it clockwise. It will now be in M5 on the large map. And corward will be turned to point right.

Attachment:

bg.gif

Has anybody tried this map?

I just noticed that if you download with IE, it changes the file extension to a .zip instead of .jar. If it does that, then you'll need to save as a .jar and then you can just double click it to run it. You will need java installed to run it.

First Contact: First contact is a term used to describe the event of two alien species meeting for the first time. It can be both exciting and scary for a species who previously thought they were alone in the universe. Advanced species have plans and protocols in place to make the most of this first meeting, but at best it's still unpredictable.

Usage: The party of three took a glance at one another before opening the door of their ship. First Contact usually went well, but it was difficult to anticipate the responses of this first meeting. Hopefully the audio communication of the prior month would open the door to a good relationship. Jeff smiled, adjusted his jacket, and then pressed the button to open the air lock.

I would change the "most prefer the soft female voice" to "the default being a soft female voice".

That way, most users will likely stick to the default and therefore prefer it as the norm.

I wish I could say yes, but I'm not exactly in a good spot in school at the moment. I have less than 6 weeks left in the year, and most of my grades are, well, less than stellar. Once summer hits, I'll have plenty of time, but for the next few weeks, I won't have much time outside of the weekends. I'll try to do things over the weekends, though.

OK...here's another stab

They come with several voices, but most prefer the soft female voice.

Cost: 75 credits

Availability: The PDD is available at most merchant shops.

Do we really know how many planets are out there?

This article talks about rogue planets that could have been thrown from one star to be caught by another. That might be an interesting twist in the Prime Universe.
